OTRC: Alice Eve lingerie scene in 'Star Trek' gratuitous? (Spoiler)

Alice Eve appears in a scene from the 2013 movie 'Star Trek Into Darkness.' (Paramount Pictures)

Warning: If you haven't seen "Star Trek Into The Darkness" there are minor spoilers ahead.

New "Star Trek" cast member Alice Eve, who plays Dr. Carol Marcus in the film, has a brief scene with Chris Pine as Captain Kirk where she appears in her underwear.

During the scene, Dr. Marcus is about to change out of her Starfleet uniform and asks Kirk to turn around. Kirk agrees, but is curious as to why he has to do it and suddenly he turns around and "accidently" sees Dr. Marcus in her lingerie.

A brief clip of the scene is also featured in international trailers for the movie.

"Star Trek Into The Darkness" co-writer Damon Lindelof was asked about the quick scene in an interview with MTV posted recently and said, "Why is Alice Eve in her underwear, gratuitously and unnecessarily, without any real effort made as to why in God's name she would undress in that circumstance? Well there's a very good answer for that. But I'm not telling you what it is. Because... uh... MYSTERY?"

Lindelof, who co-wrote the script with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, took to his Twitter account on Monday, May 20, and talked more about the scene in question.

"I copped to the fact that we should have done a better job of not being gratuitous in our representation of a barely clothed actress," he wrote in one Tweet.

He added that it wasn't just the women in "Star Trek" films that have been asked to strip down to their underwear.

"We also had Kirk shirtless in underpants in both movies. Do not want to make light of something that some construe as mysogenistic [sic]," he wrote.

"What I'm saying is I hear you, I take responsibility and will be more mindful in the future," he added.

Lindelof finished his commentary on the situation and Tweeted, "Also, I need to learn how to spell 'misogynistic.'"

Eve has not commented on the scene. Prior to her appearance in "Star Trek Into Darkness," the 31-year-old actress appeared in "Men in Black 3," "Entourage," "Sex and the City 2" and "She's Out of My League."
