OTRC: Tyler Perry donates $100,000 to Ohio schools, makes a surprise visit

Writer, director and actor Tyler Perry surprised some Finland Middle School students in Columbus, Ohio with a visit to their musical concert, on Friday, May 24. He also donated $100,000 to help the student the athletes in the city's South-Western schools.

Perry said he learned about Finland Middle School after seeing an episode of "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" on HBO that featured one of the school's teachers, Mary Mulvany, according to The Columbus Dispatch. Video of Perry's visit to the school can be viewed below.

South-Western schools cut athletics and extra-curricular activities after a failed levy in 2009. A ballot request, which resurrected sports and other activities for a fee, was later approved. A segment of the "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" episode focused on Mulvany's efforts to start a foundation that raised scholarship money to cover fees.

Perry, 43, told students and staff members at the concert, "I just wanted to come and see your faces and say hi to you because you inspire me. You all inspire me so much."

"I thought he wanted to make a donation and I thought he also wanted to see the faces of the kids that he was giving the money to," Mulvany told The Columbus Dispatch. "And to just let them know -- to give them hope just like he said, you know, that he -- they can do anything, they can dream anything, they can be anything and I think they got that message today."
