Artesia hit-run accident leaves elderly woman dead

ARTESIA, Calif.

Police said 81-year-old Carolina Estrella was in a crosswalk at the intersection of Norwalk Boulevard and Droxford Street in Artesia around 4:45 a.m. Saturday when she was struck and killed.

Estrella's family said had the driver stopped and called for help, she might have survived.

"It's a matter of a few minutes to take care of her," said Estrella's daughter, Ester Legaspi. "I'm a nurse, I've taken care of a lot of people and I was able to revive them within 10 minutes. We're able to do that. I cannot even do that to my own mom."

Estrella was a mother of 13. Her broken-hearted family says she was following her normal routine. She would head to church every Saturday, often using her wheelchair as a walker. Estrella would pick up food and visit with friends.

"My mom is a kindhearted person, she takes care of people that are on the street," Legaspi said.

The family hopes the hit-and-run vehicle was captured on surveillance video. Police said the vehicle was red and should have substantial front-end damage.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
