OTRC: Dick Van Dyke, 87: Mystery illness' cause found

Dick Van Dyke, 87, and his wife, Arlene Silver,41, pose on the red carpet at the 2013 SAG Awards in Los Angeles on Jan. 27, 2013.

Dick Van Dyke, 87, says the cause of a mysterious ailment, which had prompted him to cancel a public appearance, has been discovered. The culprit? His dental implants.

In April, The "Mary Poppins" film star and Emmy-winning TV actor was supposed to fly from California, where he lives with his wife, to New York to visit the 92nd Street Y on April 26 and receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for Bettering Humanity through Comedy. His rep said the actor had a "yet-to-be diagnosed neurological disorder."

The actor sought advice from his Twitter followers, saying his head "bangs" every time he lay down.

"It seems that my titanium dental implants are the cause of my head pounding," Van Dyke said on Twitter on May 30. "Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks for all your replies."

Titanium dental implants are often used in modern dentistry. Some research has showed that patients may discover they are allergic to the metal after getting them installed and then experience discomfort.

Van Dyke has collected at least 10,000 more Twitter followers since his health Q&A with fans, bringing his total to about 37,400, as of Friday, May 31.
