Jean Stapleton, an actress known for her role as Edith Bunker on the comedy "All in the Family" has died at age 90.
Stapleton's son, John Putch, confirmed her death to ABC News. The actress died of natural causes at her New York City home on Friday, May 31, according to The Associated Press. She was surrounded by friends and family.
The actress' children released a statement on Saturday which said, "Being the children of a beloved Mother on Television means sharing the spirit of who JEAN STAPLETON was with her friends and fans. It is with great love and heavy hearts that we say farewell to our collective Mother, with a capital M. Her devotion to her craft and her family taught us all great life lessons. Thank you for the outpouring of love and respect. We appreciate it deeply."
Stapleton won three Emmys and two Golden Globe awards for her role as Edith Bunker. She co-starred in the series with Carroll O'Connor, Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers. O'Connor died in 2001 at the age of 76.
"All in the Family" aired from 1971 to 1979 and had a spinoff series called "Archie Bunker's Place," which aired from 1979 to 1983. However, Stapleton left the show after the first season.
Stapleton was born in New York City on Jan. 19, 1923. Before breaking in to television, Stapleton appeared in several Broadway musicals including "Damn Yankees," "Funny Girl" and "Bells Are Ringing."
She had a few roles on shows like "Naked City," "My Three Sons," "The Patty Duke Show" and "The Doctors and the Nurses" before getting her role in "All in the Family."
Stapleton also starred in a 1982 television movie about Eleanor Roosevelt called "Eleanor, First Lady of the World." The role earned her an Emmy nomination and a Golden Globe nomination.
More recently, Stapleton appeared in films like "Michael" and "You've Got Mail." She also had roles on shows like "Everybody Loves Raymond," "Grace Under Fire" and "Touched by an Angel."
Stapleton was married to William Putch for 26 years before he died of a heart attack in 1983. She is survived by her two children, John Putch and Pamela Putch.
