Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson star in the upcoming comedy "The Internship" as a couple of businessmen who lose their jobs and end up as interns for Google.
While Wilson previously talked to George Pennacchio of KABC Television, OTRC.com's parent company, about Vaughn treating the Google campus like it was Club Med. Vaughn also talked to Pennacchio about the time he was once fired from his job as a lifeguard at the YMCA and shared the story of his "first save."
"When I was younger I was a lifeguard at a YMCA and I was late too many times," Vaughn explained.
Wilson asked Vaughn, "To save someone? Like someone drowned?"
"No, no, no," Vaughn replied. "I'll tell one funny story where there was a woman that was older in the pool and you know, older always is like whatever 10 or 15 years older than you feels old, but this woman was a grandmother and the kids referred to her as babushka and she did not speak good English."
"She was in the shallow end with flippers on, you know, those things that kids would wear on the side," he added. "And she started to slowly drift toward the deep end and I was talking to my boss and the woman was looking at me and kind of like looking at me and smiling and the woman [his boss] said, 'She's not in control anymore. She's drifting too deep. You gotta get in there and help her.'"
Vaughn went on to explain that the woman wasn't in immediate danger, but the water was starting to come up to her chin.
"I jump in the water and I take her and I move her maybe seven feet," the actor said. "She kind of is happy and thank you and I get out and my boss, like in a real kind of like tough way, she goes, 'Congratulations on your first save.'"
"And it made me feel like -- I just had my first save," Vaughn added. "So in a way I felt like okay, great, I got save number one."
However, Vaughn said that feeling of accomplishment quickly faded after he talked to his father about the incident.
"I went home, I told my dad that story and he said, 'You didn't save anybody! That's ridiculous. You moved a senior a couple of feet. You didn't save anybody at all,'" he said.
"Sounds like your dad would get along good with my dad," Wilson joked.
"The Internship" hits theaters on Friday, June 7.
