OTRC: Ethan Hawke talks 'The Purge': 3 highlights (Video)

Ethan Hawke talks to OTRC.com about the 2013 film 'The Purge.'

Ethan Hawke and "Game of Thrones" actress Lena Headey play parents who make a questionable decision during a time of crisis in the new horror film "The Purge."

The movie hit theaters on Friday, June 7. In "The Purge," the United States is in a state of economic collapse and marks an annual holiday in which people are allowed to do commit crimes -- namely murder-- for a period of 12 hours. Hawke's character's family allows a mysterious stranger in their family home during a lockdown and chaos ensues.

The actor talked to OTRC.com about the movie, which also stars Rhys Wakefield as the villain. Check out 3 highlights from the interview and watch it in its entirety below.

1. On working with a small budget ...

"Sometimes, if you're in a movie and they have a huge budget, then they just start using money to solve all the problems with the script, or something. 'This idea doesn't work, so let's just drive a tank through a house.' Just something that money can buy. When you don't have money, then it has to rest on the ideas and the execution."

"And I think one of the fun things I had last year, making 'Sinister' and this year, doing 'The Purge' is these movies just rest on a real, simple idea. And they're either terrifying and they just, they work because of that."

2. On Rhys Wakefield's performance as a villain ...

"I told him when we wrapped this movie -- 'This is the best villain' [in a movie] I've ever been a part of.' His face ... is more like a mask when he takes the mask off than when he has it on. It's a beautifully written character but he just nailed it. It's something out of a Kubrick film, I felt.

3. The hardest thing about making "The Purge" ...

"That's the hardest thing about making this -- is that rewrites do happen on the fly and you have to be, 'Are you making a good decision or a bad decision?' Because when you're under a lot of pressure, you know, with these movies, we don't have a ton of money and a ton of time, so we have to throw ourselves at it completely."

"And we do -- we were making this stuff -- 'Oh, I'll hit him with a pool cue!" "OK, stab him in the guts!" "OK, throw him over the thing!" "Oh, wait, we don't have another breakaway window." "OK, I'll throw him into the wall!" You just .. you try to have a good time."
