OTRC: Robert Downey Jr. to return as Iron Man in 2 'Avengers' sequels

Robert Downey Jr. talks to OTRC.com about 'Iron Man 3' ahead of its May 3, 2013 release.

Get ready for even MORE Iron Man.

Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as the red and gold superhero and alter ego, billionaire Tony Stark, in "The Avengers 2" and "The Avengers 3," two sequels to the 2012 ensemble film, production and comic book firm Marvel announced on Thursday, June 20.

The 48-year-old actor revealed earlier this year that he was paid $50 million to play Iron Man in "The Avengers." He debuted his character in the 2008 film "Iron Man" and reprised the role in two more sequels. "Iron Man 3," was released on May 3 (Watch Robert Downey Jr.'s interview about the film by clicking the image above). The three films have made a total of $2.4 billion.

"The Avengers" has made more than $1.5 billion since its 2012 release. Marvel said the second film is set to be released on May 1, 2015. The movie will be helmed by "The Avengers" director and writer Joss Whedon.

"The only weapon I have in my arsenal, honestly, is that I'm gonna make it good," he told OTRC.com in April, regarding "The Avengers 2." "The only thing that I could do is try to make a good movie and now I'm going to try to make a better one."

(NOTE: Marvel, OTRC.com and parent firm KABC Television are owned by the Walt Disney Company.)
