U.S. Ambassador to Colombia Michael McKinley said DEA Special Agent James "Terry" Watson, assigned to the DEA office in Cartagena, was meeting with friends at a Bogota restaurant.
Watson, 43, left the restaurant in a cab that was intercepted about three blocks away by another taxi. Two men got out of the other cab and attempted to pull Watson out of the cab, stabbing him three times in the chest and once in the leg, according to a Colombian National Police official.
The attackers fled. Watson was found in the street by a police patrol and was taken a to a clinic several blocks away, but he was already dead, according to officials.
Watson was on temporary assignment in Bogota. He had worked in Colombia for about a year and a half.
Police were reviewing area security cameras in hopes of identifying the assailants. The police department has offered a reward of 50 million pesos ($25,800) for information leading to the arrest of those responsible.
