Demi Lovato suffered a very unfortunate loss over the weekend.

The 20-year-old performer's father, Patrick Lovato, passed away over the weekend from undisclosed causes, according to E! News.

The "Give Your Heart A Break" singer, who initially remained mum on the news, took to her official Twitter account to thank her fans and followers for their support.

"I feel so humbled to have had so much support from my fans, friends, family and complete strangers.. God bless you all, thank you so much," she Tweeted on Sunday, June 23.

The singer's older sister, Dallas Lovato, also expressed her feelings on the micro-blogging platform, posting: "Rest in peace daddy I love you."

The singer and former Disney starlet is known by many for her role as a judge on FOX's popular singing series, "The X Factor." After missing a photo call for the competition series over the weekend, show creator Simon Cowell expressed his support on Twitter, saying: "My thoughts are with you Demi. X."

Lovato's mother, Dianna De La Garza, divorced the singer's father in 1994. The rising star penned her 2011 track, "For the Love of a Daughter," about her tough relationship with her dad.

"Oh, father, please, father / I'd love to leave you alone / But I can't let you go," she sings in the emotional ballad from her "Unbroken" album. "Don't you remember I'm your baby girl? / How could you throw me right out of your world? / So young when the pain had begun / Now forever afraid of being loved."

The singer also opened up about her strained relationship with her estranged father in 2009, telling the New York Daily News that she hadn't spoken to him since 2007.

"The last time I talked to him was two years ago," Demi said in the June 2009 interview. "You try to have faith in somebody, even when you're the last person that believes in him. But when somebody lets you down after you've been the only one there for them, and so many times, you don't know what else to do. I had to cut off all connection. It was hurting me too much."
