LAPD released surveillance video of the ambush suspect on Wednesday. The brazen suspect was caught on camera calmly walking away just moments after he allegedly opened fire on two undercover LAPD burglary detectives Tuesday.
The pair were attacked around 4:30 Tuesday morning outside the Wilshire Station as they were waiting for the gate to the parking lot to open.
"You can clearly see a dark object in his right hand. Based on the officers' statements and evidence we believe that object to be a revolver," said Beck.
Luckily the two detectives weren't seriously hurt. But that wasn't the case for an LAPD gang officer who was shot in the face during a probation and parole check in Willowbrook that turned into a shootout with the suspect. A probation officer was also injured.
After an overnight standoff and firing tear gas into the house, the suspect was found dead inside. Investigators say it's unclear if he was shot by police or took his own life.
"This incident certainly highlights the dangers and unpredictable nature of what probation and police officers encounter every day in our communities," said L.A. County Chief Probation Officer Jerry Powers.
And with one suspect still on the loose, Chief Beck says tracking him down should be a top priority for everyone.
"Anybody that is willing to engage two armed Los Angeles police officers in a gun battle certainly has no compunctions about attacking unarmed civilians," said Beck.
