OTRC: Paula Deen dropped by Sears, Kmart, Walgreens and J.C. Penney

Things just keep getting worse for Paula Deen.

After QVC announced on Thursday that the company would be taking a "pause" from its partnership with Deen, Sears, Kmart, Walgreens and J.C. Penney Co. all said on Friday, June 28, that they were cutting ties with Deen as well.

The companies join a long list of corporations which cut ties with Deen following revelations that she had used the N-word in the past.

Sears Holdings Corp., which owns both Sears and Kmart, said on Friday that it will phase out Deen-branded products after "careful consideration of all available information," according to The Associated Press. "We will continue to evaluate the situation."

J.C. Penney Co. Inc. also told the wire service in an email that it will discontinue selling Deen's products. Walgreen Co. said on Friday it too was phasing out Deen-branded products.

Other companies that have parted ways with Deen include Wal-Mart, Target, Smithfield Foods, the Food Network and Home Depot.

In addition to being dropped by Sears, Kmart, Walgreens and J.C. Penney, Ballantine Books announced it had cancelled publication of "Paula Deen's New Testament: 250 Favorite Recipes, All Lightened Up." Deen's literary agent also told the AP that Deen's five-book deal with the company had been called off.

The book, which was set for release in October, was No. 1 on Amazon.com's "Books Best Sellers" list, at the time of this writing. "Paula Deen's Southern Cooking Bible," is No. 2 on the list and several other Deen books were out of stock.

The wire service reports that Macy's Inc. and Kohl's Corp. still carry Deen's products. Kohl's declined to comment to The AP about the situation and Macy's Inc. said on Thursday it will continue to "monitor the situation."

Hoffman Media LLC, which publishes Deen's magazine, "Cooking with Paula Deen," announced on Friday it will continue to work with the chef.

"Hoffman Media has worked closely with Ms. Deen since 2005," Eric Hoffman, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Hoffman Media, said in a statement to the AP. "The recent images portrayed by the media do not reflect the person we know on a personal or a professional level."

In 2012, Deen placed No. 4 on Forbes' list of Top Earning Chefs, topping names like Mario Batali, Bobby Flay and Guy Fieri, thanks in part to her product empire and endorsement deals. The magazine estimated that Deen earned $17 million between June 2011 and June 2012.
