A major road serving downtown Long Beach and nearby areas shut down since Friday reopened Sunday as crews finished work ahead of schedule.

Ocean Boulevard from Shoreline Drive to State Route 47 reopened just after midnight Sunday.

The closure was scheduled to last until 5 a.m. Monday.

Workers are demolishing the Pier-T off ramp from the Gerald Desmond Bridge as part of a $1 billion project to replace the aging bridge. The new structure will include two 50-story-high-towers and will be one of the tallest cable-stayed bridges in the country and the first of its kind in California, officials said.
