Crews rescued a driver who apparently lost control and ended up 400 feet down a mountain in La Canada Flintridge early Tuesday morning.

The accident happened just after 1 a.m. on Angeles Crest Highway at Mile Marker 42.

The California Highway Patrol says a passenger was able to get out of the car and climb up the mountain for help.

Authorities say the driver was only able to make it halfway up, so rescuers came to his aid. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital after complaining of chest pain.

The crash remains under investigation.
