OTRC: Neil Patrick Harris: 'Smurfs 2' is about 'definition of family'

Neil Patrick Harris talks to OTRC.com at the premiere of 'The Smurfs 2' at the Regency Village Theatre in Westwood, near Los Angeles, on July 28, 2013.

Neil Patrick Harris says "The Smurfs 2" is a better film than the first movie in the half-animated children's franchise, citing how the sequel is more about "the definition of family."

The 40-year-old actor brought his own loved ones -- his partner David Burtka and their twins, Harper and Gideon, to the premiere of the film on July 28. The event was a family affair for many -- Britney Spears, who contributed the song "Ooh La La" to the movie's soundtrack, arrived with her two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James (see PHOTOS).

"From all accounts, the second film is a better film than the first one," Harris told OTRC.com. "So for all the people that have watched 'Smurfs 1' because they had the DVD and their kids demanded that they watch it 75 times, I think they'll be happy to know that the second movie is better as a film than the first."

Harris reprises his role of Patrick, a human friend of the Smurfs, from the first movie. "The Smurfs 2" also features Katy Perry as Smurfette and Hank Azaria as the villain Gargamel.

"Family's important and this movie touches upon the definition of family to each person," Harris told OTRC.com. "It's kind of Smurfette's origin story -- her realizing than even though she was created by Gargamel, that her family is the Smurfs."

"My character, Patrick, is going through a similar situation," the actor added. "His real father left when he was five and he was raised by his stepfather, played by Brendan Gleeson, that he doesn't really connect with and throughout the movie, has to realize that family is what you decide it is, not necessarily how you're actually conceived."

"The Smurfs hits theaters on July 31. Watch the trailer as well as Neil Patrick Harris' interview with OTRC.com, above.
