Lady Gaga has released her new single, "Applause," one week early due to what she called "hackers" and "an abundance of low/high quality leaks.
The fast-paced, high-bass, pulsating dance track was posted online on Monday, Aug. 12, via iHeartRadio (listen below). It was supposed to be released on Aug. 19 and is featured on her upcoming album, "ARTPOP," which is due to hit stores on Nov. 11.
"A POP MUSIC EMERGENCY IS UNDERWAY 911 - 911 SUMMON THE MONSTER TROUPES," read a message posted on Lady Gaga's Twitter and Facebook pages on Monday. "DUE TO HACKERS AN ABUNDANCE OF LOW/HIGH QUALITY LEAKS...WE ISSUE THIS POP MUSIC EMERGENCY...MONSTERS SPREAD THE WORD. MY NEW SINGLE 'APPLAUSE' IS OUT TODAY AND CAN BE HEARD ON UNITED STATES RADIO IN 5 MINUTES. INTERNATIONAL RADIO TO FOLLOW."
"HERE IS A PHOTO TO ACCOMPANY THIS EMERGENCY," Lady Gaga added, alongside a picture of her posing topless in black underwear, with long, brunette hair covering her chest.
"Applause" contains lyrics such as: "I stand here waiting for you to bang the gong / To crash the critic saying / Is it right or is it wrong? / If only fame had an IV / Baby, could I bear / Being away from you / I found the vein, put it in here."
Lady Gaga now stands to compete on the Billboard Hot 100 Single Chart next week against fellow pop star Katy Perry, who recently released her own new single, "Roar," Billboard reported.
The decision to release "Applause" early appeared to be made recently. On Sunday, Lady Gaga's Facebook page displayed a photo of the singer with her labradoodle dog, Fozzi, and the message: "Put your paws up make'em count! 8 fingers, 1 Fozzi Bear. #?8DaysTillApplause #?LetmeSeeYourSELFIES."
On Saturday, the singer said: "Wanna grab some shovels and [expletive] up some hackers?"
MTV Video Music Awards 2013 performance
Lady Gaga has said that she plans to perform "Applause" at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 25. The event will mark her first major public appearance since she was hospitalized and underwent hip surgery in February. She did, however, sing the national anthem at New York's Gay Pride in June.
