Northbound 101 Freeway lanes reopen in Calabasas after car fire

CALABASAS, Calif.

A Volkswagen Bug caught fire around 3 p.m. and the flames spread to nearby brush on the westside of the freeway. The CHP shut down three lanes on the freeway near Las Virgenes Road for hours, creating a major backup.

The CHP said all lanes were cleared on the 101 Freeway by 10:08 p.m.

Dubbed the Old Fire, Los Angeles County Fire said the blaze has been fully contained and has burned about 170 acres.

Crews battled flames from the ground and air. Two camp crew inmates had minor injuries. The flames threatened homes for some time, but crews stopped any forward spread. Early reports indicated some homes were being evacuated, but the L.A. County Sheriff's Lost Hills Station said there were no evacuations.

Correction: An earlier version of this story reported the fire on the westbound 101 Freeway; the fire began on the northbound 101 Freeway.
