Legendary actor Dick Van Dyke was able to escape his car before it caught on fire on the side of the 101 freeway in Calabasas, California on Monday, Aug. 19.
The 87-year-old actor's vehicle stalled while he was driving on the freeway and the actor pulled over to the shoulder, the California Highway Patrol confirmed to KABC Television, OTRC.com's parent company.
A spokesperson for Van Dyke told ABC News the actor was on the way to the dentist when he began to have car trouble. He leaned over to retrieve something out of the glove compartment when his car started smoking. Van Dyke was able to exit the vehicle before the car caught on fire.
The California Highway Patrol told KABC Television that someone nearby opened Van Dyke's car door, but Van Dyke got out of the car on his own.
Van Dyke's spokesperson said the actor is "fine."
His wife, Arlene Van Dyke posted a Vine which features clips of the damaged car as well as Van Dyke talking to CHP officers.
