Riverside standoff with burglary suspect ends peacefully

RIVERSIDE, Calif.

Authorities say the standoff was on Marlborough Avenue between Chicago and Laurel avenues. Someone reported seeing a man cutting through screens of a window at his neighbor's home at about 7:30 a.m. Plainclothes detectives in the area spotted the suspect and chased him two blocks over to Marlborough Avenue.

The suspect confronted a woman holding her baby, telling her he was being chased by police and needed to hide. The man then ran around her and into her home. She saw the plainclothes detectives and told them where the man was.

Police say the suspect then called 911 dispatchers in Riverside, telling them that he was inside the home, that he was armed and that he had no plans of coming out. It was later determined that the suspect did not have weapons on him.

The woman said there was nobody else in the home. A SWAT team responded to the scene and surrounded the location.

Residents in the area were evacuated as a precaution. It's unclear how many people were affected.

The suspect surrendered without further incident at about 12:45 p.m. He was booked on two charges of burglary and felony vandalism.
