Hawthorne methane leak stopped, not capped yet

HAWTHORNE, Calif.

The well has been spewing water and methane since Thursday. Workers injected water into the well yesterday to halt the outflow. They also began pumping mud and other materials to cap the well, and crews have shut down Imperial Highway between Inglewood and Firmona avenues in order to finish the job Tuesday.

Thirty-seven families, approximately 125 people, were evacuated as a precaution Thursday night. They have been placed in hotels by the Golden State Water Company, which operates the well.

The evacuated residents will be allowed to return home once the work is done and methane levels return to normal.
