Culver City police say a man was shot to death by officers after passing through a gate into the police station parking lot on Saturday.

Authorities say the suspect barged onto the parking lot in the 4000 block of Duquesne Avenue at 7:15 a.m. Officers at the end of their shift pulled into the parking lot when the man, who had been pacing back and forth on the sidewalk, followed the police cruiser onto the lot before the security gate had closed.

When the officers asked if he needed help, the man pulled out a handgun and said, "Officers, I have a gun."

"Three officers then began giving commands for him to drop the gun, at which time he raised it, pointed it at the officers, and an officer-involved shooting occurred," said Lt. David Coleman of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Two officers fired their weapons. The suspect was struck by one bullet. He was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released. No officers were injured.

It remains unclear what prompted him to go onto the Culver City Police Department's property. The Los Angeles County sheriff's homicide detectives are assisting in the investigation.
