Walt Disney Pictures has released the first photo from its upcoming live-action film "Cinderella," adding that principal photography has begun in London.
The picture shows main star Lily James riding a horse. The British actress is known for her role as Lady Rose MacClare on the TV show "Downton Abbey."
As Disney has announced over the past few months, "Cinderella" also features Richard Madden, formerly of "Game of Thrones," as the prince who wins her heart, Helena Bonham Carter as Cinderella's fairy godmother and Cate Blanchett as her evil stepmother.
Holliday Grainger of "Great Expectations" and "Anna Karenina" and Sophie McShera, who plays Daisy Mason on "Downton Abbey," will portray Cinderella's wicked stepsisters.
"The story of 'Cinderella' follows the fortunes of young Ella, whose merchant father remarries following the tragic death of her mother," Disney said in a statement obtained by OTRC.com. "Keen to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother Lady Tremaine and her daughters Anastasia and Drisella into the family home. But, when Ella's father suddenly and unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family."
Like the beloved 1950 Disney animated movie, in the live-action film, Cinderella is made a servant to her stepfamily and renamed Cinderella because she is often covered in ashes. She meets a "dashing stranger," unaware that he is a prince, and falls in love. He invites all the unmarried women in the land to a ball at his palace and her stepmother forbids her to attend.
"But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand as a kindly beggar woman steps forward and, armed with a pumpkin and a few mice, changes Cinderella's life forever," Disney's statement said.
The movie is directed by Kenneth Branagh and is set for release on March 13, 2015.
