LAUSD was testing a program to equip every student with one of the Apple tablets. Thirteen schools were involved in the trial run.
Of the 71 missing iPads, 69 were from one school - the Valley Academy of Arts and Sciences in Granada Hills.
Despite the setbacks, the district is launching the $1 billion program aimed at putting iPads in the hands of every student in the school system. About 14,000 iPads have been distributed so far.
Officials say they were able to implement new security measures due to the thefts.
The district is looking for ways to ensure students use the devices for school work only. Last week, the district acknowledged many students have hacked the iPads in order to access the Internet.
