Stephen Colbert helped one lucky couple tie the knot on his show after he learned that the pair's wedding was affected by the recent government shutdown.
Mike Cassesso and MaiLien Le planned to have their wedding on Oct. 5 on the lawn near the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C., where the two had their first date, but the site and other national monuments have been closed due to the shutdown.
So Colbert, who revealed during "The Colbert Report" on Thursday that he has been an ordained minister of the American Marriage Ministries since June 2011, decided to help the couple out and marry the two on his show. Check out the video below.
Dubbed "The 2013 Government Shutdown Wedding of the Century," Colbert donned a bright red clergy robe and brought in the groom and his groomsmen for a quickie bachelor party with shots, but they didn't have time for the "stripper."
Cassesso's best man couldn't attend the ceremony, so Colbert had Smokey Bear fill in "thanks to the furloughs at the Parks Service."
Colbert then brought in the bridesmaids and did another round of shots. He also posed as the stripper for their bachelorette party, wearing a police hat and waving a gun while briefly dancing to a disco beat.
After a little bit of staged drama with the bride, Le walked to the stage holding, presumably, an Emmy from one of the show's wins at the ceremony last month in lieu of a bouquet.
"Homeland" star Mandy Patinkin made an appearance to give "a non-denominational Jewish blessing" and then plugged his Showtime drama series. Five-time Tony winner and former "Private Practice" star Audra McDonald also made an appearance on the show to sing Billy Idol's "White Wedding" for the couple's first dance.
Colbert isn't the first to marry a couple on-air. Back in November 2011, Conan O'Brien officiated the wedding of Scott Cronick, a costume designer for the show, and his partner, David Gorshein, in New York on air to celebrate the one-year anniversary of his TBS show. In March 2013, Kathy Griffin officiated a vow renewal for a same-sex couple on her late-night show. In June 2010, "How I Met Your Mother" star Jason Segel officiated the wedding of Abbe Thorner and Jason Wood on "The Tonight Show."
