The actor, who turns 26 on Oct. 18, is also a co-producer of the movie. He, Miles Teller and Michael B Jordan play buddies who enjoy their lives as single men -- but their bromance is challenged by female love interests, who seek commitment. Efron appeared to be healthy and in good spirits at a Q&A event for the movie on Tuesday night in Los Angeles (See more PHOTOS of the actor there).
The event took place almost a month after it was reported that Efron had undergone rehab for an undisclosed ailment earlier this year. He has not commented about the issue. He has stepped out in public since the news broke -- he attended the annual Los Angeles Haunted Hayride last week.
At the "That Awkward Moment" Q&A event, which was recorded for Yahoo!, Efron said he and his co-stars aimed to "show a romantic comedy in a way that we'd never seen it done before, which is sort of how our lives are, to a degree."
Efron, who famously dated "High School Musical" co-star Vanessa Hudgens for several years until 2010, also offered his take on love, relationships and women.
"I think everybody at one point or another in their lives is gonna encounter that "So?" moment, that awkward moment," Efron said. "It can manifest itself in many different ways."
"But eventually, you're gonna come to an awkward moment that is sort of the bridge between where you are currently in a relationship and where you end up. So, it's a barrier that kind of has to be, I don't know, broken down, if you will," he added.
When asked what he looks for in a woman who would be considered relationship material, Efron said: "I think someone who's kind of creative and smart, you know, self-confident. A nice smile. That's a good thing to have."
