"The Voice" star and singer-songwriter CeeLo Green has pleaded not guilty after being charged with giving ecstasy to a woman who had accused him of sexual assault.
The 39-year-old TV star, whose real name is Thomas DeCarlo Callaway, entered his plea at a Los Angeles court on Monday, Oct. 21. He will not face rape charges due to lack of evidence, prosecutors say. He faces up to four years in prison for his charge of one felony count of furnishing a controlled substance.
CeeLo is accused of allegedly slipping ecstasy to a 34-year-old woman while the two had dinner at a restaurant in downtown Los Angeles in July 2012. He and the woman later went to the woman's hotel, prosecutors say. Following allegations of drug-facilitated sexual assault, police began to investigate the case.
Prosecutors determined "there is insufficient evidence to prove that the level of the victim's intoxication deprived the victim of the capacity to give consent" and that "there is insufficient evidence to prove that [CeeLo] knew or should have known that the victim lacked the capacity to consent to have sex with him as required by law."
