The 34-year-old posted her first tweet on Friday, Oct. 25, under the username @KatieHolmes212 -- a nod to the New York City area code. She moved to the city last year amid her split from husband Tom Cruise.
In her first tweet, Holmes attached a photo of herself standing with her co-stars in the new sci-fi-fantasy film "The Giver" -- pop star Taylor Swift, as well as actors Jeff Bridges, Cameron Monaghan of Showtime's "Shameless," and Odeya Rush. Producer Nikki Silver is also pictured. (see below)
The movie is set for release in August 2014 and is based on a Lois Lowry novel about how a young boy who lives in a utopian community is chosen to learn about the "real" world from an elderly man. Bridges plays the title character.
"So happy to be on twitter!!!!!! Sending first tweets from South Africa!!!!!" Holmes tweeted later, adding: "On set today filming the Giver. Love working with directer Phil Noyce am so grateful for such a wonderful experience."
The actress also retweeted a message promoting Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. Holmes is a spokesmodel for the brand.
As of Friday afternoon, Holmes has acquired at least 25,300 followers. She herself is following several celebrities, including Swift and "Dawson's Creek" creator Kevin Williamson, creator of "Dawson's Creek," who also directed Holmes in the 1999 movie "Teaching Mrs. Tingle." The acress is not following "Dawson's Creek" co-stars James Van Der Beek and Joshua Jackson.
