Breast cancer survivors get dirty for good cause

LOS ANGELES

"I think it's going to be fun. I think it's something I would never do before," said Cyndee Hudak of Costa Mesa. Hudak, Cindy Ross and Vickie Wen are half of the No Sister Left Behind team. They're all taking part in the Dirty Girl Mud Run this Saturday in Acton.

"The Dirty Girl race is designed for women to get together and do kind of like a once in a lifetime, or twice, or three times event that is noncompetitive, non-timed, and you do it at your pace," explained Wen.

Hudak, Ross and Wen, who were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, met through Facebook and have helped each other through surgeries, chemo, radiation and hair loss.

"When I first found out, it was pure shock," Hudak said.

"We've all been there to support each other through everything, through anything," said Ross.

Wen was diagnosed with stage four metastatic cancer, which currently has no treatment - but that's not stopping her.

"I'm not dead yet. I'm not sick. I feel great, but it's hard to believe there's an intruder in my body that's just taking over, and we need a cure," Wen said.

"We don't concentrate on breast cancer. We try not to think about it. We're just really, really close friends that support each other through everything," Ross said.

So they cry, hug and share everything including teaming up for the Dirty Girl race.

"For any survivor, you get to go for free and it's usually between $65 and $100 otherwise, and we can go to as many as we want for free," Ross said.

The goal isn't to actually win a physical mud race. Moreover, the goal is to raise money for a breast cancer cure. This year, the Dirty Girl organization will raise $250,000 for the Bright Pink charity.

One of 60 nationwide, the 5k Dirty Girl obstacle course mud run is for women only. It's untimed and designed to get you out of your comfort zone and into a filthy good time.

It's something Wen says we could all benefit from.

"If you're not dead, you're not done. Live your life as you can," she said.
