Kanye West pled not guilty to misdemeanor battery and attempted grand theft charges, which stem from a scuffle that occurred between West and a paparazzo earlier this year.

West's attorney, Blair Berk, entered the plea on the rapper's behalf in a Los Angeles court on Thursday, Nov. 7, The Associated Press reports. West was initially charged by the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office in September.

The rapper was involved in a scuffle with celebrity photographer Daniel Ramos on July 19 at Los Angeles International Airport. Ramos claimed his right hip was injured when West allegedly punched him in an unprovoked attack. Ramos, who is being represented by famed attorney Gloria Allred, filed a lawsuit against the rapper.

If convicted of the charges, West could be sent to jail for a year -- six months per count, or a $1,000 fine. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office had initially declined to file felony assault and attempted robbery charges against West, saying Ramos' did not suffer a significant injury.

The case is due back in court on Jan. 23.

Last month, West became engaged to girlfriend Kim Kardashian. The rapper's elaborate proposal took place in front of their friends and family at AT&T park in San Francisco on the same day as Kardashian's 33rd birthday.

West had the words "PLEEEASE MARRY MEEE!" projected on the venue's jumbotron and there was also an orchestra which played West and Keri Hilson's "Knock You Down" during the proposal.

This will be the first marriage for West and the third for Kardashian, who was previously married to NBA player Kris Humphries. Kardashian and West welcomed daughter North West in June.
