Man, 2 sons in drifting boat rescued by Coast Guard off coast of Marina del Rey

MARINA DEL REY, LOS ANGELES

A 17-foot skiff launched from Cabrillo en route to Marina del Rey did return to land Thursday night as scheduled.

The engine died about 7 p.m. Thursday. The man called for assistance from a commercial rescue operation, then canceled the call and had a friend come to rescue the boat, but the friend could not find them. The friend called the Coast Guard Friday morning.

Coast Guard crews went searching for the boat with boats and a helicopter. The boat was located about 10 miles off the coast.

The boat reportedly ran out of gas overnight. A Coast Guard vessel towed it to Marina del Rey Friday morning.

The man and two boys were not in need of medical attention.
