UPDATE: Adam Levine will accept his new "Sexiest Man Alive" title officially in person on the ABC late-night talk show "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on Wednesday, Nov. 20. The show airs at 11:35 p.m. ET.
The 34-year-old follows in the footsteps of Channing Tatum, last year's honoree, Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp and George Clooney. In 1984, Mel Gibson became the first actor to be given the title by the magazine.
The announcement of Levine's honor was made by Carson Daly during a live episode of "The Voice" on Tuesday, according to ABC News. Levine's issue of People magazine will be made available in New York and Los Angeles on Wednesday, Nov. 20. The issue hits newsstands nationwide on Friday, Nov. 22.
"As a musician, you have fantasies that you want to win Grammys, but I didn't really think that this was on the table," Levine told the magazine. "I was just amazed and stunned and it almost seemed like they were kidding, but they weren't, so that's cool."
The singer also talked about settling down with fiancee Behati Prinsloo, a 24-year-old Victoria's Secret model. The two confirmed their engagement in July.
"I didn't think marriage was for me for a long time," he told the magazine. "I was ready when I was ready. That's about as simple as it could possibly be."
Levine was rumored to be People's pick as early as last week and he was asked about it during an appearance on NBC'S "Today" show on Nov. 15, but he said, "I know nothing."
