Mountain High Resort to open for season on Sunday

WRIGHTWOOD, SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

Mountain High Resort in Wrightwood will open for the 2013-14 season at 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

More than a foot of snow fell at the resort over the past couple of days, just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday crowds.

"We got the perfect storm. It came in, it sat right over Mountain High, and it just continued to drop snow," said Kim Hermon with Mountain High Resort.

"We're here to snowboard first thing tomorrow morning," said Guillermo Torres of Pico Rivera. "We saw that this place was getting hit with some pretty good snow, so we were pretty excited about that."

Some people aren't waiting for the resort to open. A few families drove up the mountain Saturday morning, parked their cars along the side of the road and started playing in the snow.

"It's fun. We were planning to go to Home Depot, but we changed our plans to be out here," said Albert Garcia of Norco.

"It's pretty good weather," said Michael Villanueva of Victorville. "Usually since we're in the High Desert, it only happens a little often, but it's pretty cool, and you have a lot of fun."

The snow is also a welcome sight for local businesses. The Evergreen Cafe was packed with diners Saturday night.

"We really rely on the tourist trade, and it's been pretty low the last couple years. The snow's been really down, so we're really excited; it's coming up so much," said Casee Moore with the Evegreen Cafe.

Mountain High tickets will be $45 for adults and $25 for children ages 7 to 12. Kids 6 and under can ski for free with a paying adult.
