Adonis Ortiz underwent the multivisceral transplant in October at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Medical Center. Now, doctors say he has the chance to live a normal life.
Adonis developed liver disease and had his first surgery when he was just 3 months old. Doctors also say the boy was born with a condition in which the intestines protrude through a hole in the abdominal wall.
In October, doctors transplanted a new liver, pancreas, stomach and small and large intestines. His mother empathized with the parents who donated the organs.
"They gave my baby a second chance. So I'm really thankful. I'm dying to meet them and send them pictures and everything, and you know, say thank you," said Aracelis Ortiz, Adonis' mother.
Doctors say the multi-organ transplants performed on Adonis are rare - maybe 10 to 15 patients get them in the entire country per year.
Adonis is expected to make a full recovery and as if to prove doctors right, Adonis was playing and wandering around like a normal toddler.
