11. "Homeland": The political and espionage thriller returned to television in September with Claire Danes' character, Carrie Matheson, a bi-polar CIA officer, separated from her lover Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) after he had been (wrongly) accused of a bombing at the CIA headquarters. The series also stars Mandy Patinkin, Morena Baccarin and Rupert Friend.
Why we love it: Initially, the first three episodes of the season felt a little off ... until the big plot twist in episode 4, where we learned that Saul and Carrie were in cahoots and planned her break from the CIA and stay in a mental institution.
The acting on the show is still top-notch and Danes won an Emmy Award in September for her role on the show. Earlier this year, Danes and Lewis won Golden Globe awards, however, the two actors were shut out in the lead actor and actress categories for the 2014 award show.
"Homeland" just wrapped up its third season. Each season has 12 episodes, so it won't be too hard to catch up.
When does "Homeland" return? Although this season finale sort of felt like a series finale, with the big death in the final episode of season 3, Showtime announced in October that the show had been renewed for a 12-episode fourth season, set to debut in 2014. Whew.
Spoiler alert! The fact that the show can keep us guessing, in the age of Internet spoilers, is rare and it was a white-knuckle ride all the way to the shocking (but logical) finale -- which featured Brody's death. What will happen to Carrie's baby? Is Saul out of the CIA game for good? We'll just have to wait a while to find out.
