Special honorable mention: "Breaking Bad" - this AMC series ended on a sad but satisfying note after five seasons on Sept. 29, 2013. The show chronicled the rise and fall of hero-turned-villain Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with cancer and partners with former student Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) to cook and distribute an almost perfect type of meth in a bid to make more money to support his family and take care of those enormous medical bills.

Why we loved it: The evolution of White, who takes on the evil alter ego Heisenberg, is something to behold -- we rooted for him, then we hated him while still, somehow, continuing to root for him. Paul's performance during the final season was his best work -- we felt Pinkman's pain and anguish as he was put through the ringer. The show won the 2013 Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series and both Cranston and Paul have earned Emmys for their performances, and deservingly so.

Also, we loved the fantastic supporting characters Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk), White's smarmy lawyer (known for his catchphrase, "Better call Saul", hit man and sometimes associate Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) and brother-in-law cop Hank Schrader (Dean Norris), whose search for "Heisenberg" -- who is right under his nose -- is as furious as Captain Ahab's pursuit of Moby Dick.

Finally, we'll never be able to look at Danny Trejo -- or a tortoise -- the same ever again.

"Breaking Bad" spinoff: The show may be over but AMC is developing a spinoff series called "Better Call Saul," focusing on the lawyer with the greatest one-liners -- and comb-over -- of all time.
