7. "Orange Is The New Black" -- This Netflix sensation debuted in 2013 and spurred hours of summer binge-watching and anguish waiting for new episodes until 2014. The show, based on the memoir by the same name by Piper Kerman, stars the likes of Taylor Schilling, Jason Biggs, Laura Prepon, Taryn Manning, Michelle Hurst, Kate Mulgrew, Michael J. Harney and Natasha Lyonne.
Why we love it: Season 1 has been available to stream on Netflix since July 2013. The company's programming philosophy, allowing subscribers to "binge-watch" a complete season of a show all at once, is both the reason why we love "Orange Is The New Black" and also the reason we are clamoring for more.
The 13 flawless season 1 episodes explore the back stories of the different inmates, giving the viewer an explanation about how they ended up behind bars and causing us all to fall in love with the characters and wanting to know more.
Spoiler alert! The lady drama is immense, ranging from catfights to relationship turmoil to full-out brawls, gives viewers a different perspective of what happens behind bars in a women's correctional facility. Schilling's character, Piper Chapman, serves as the show's main source of conflict, mostly rooted in her twisted love triangle with fiance Larry Bloom (Biggs) and Alex Vause (Prepon). Once loyal to her drug-dealing girlfriend, Piper is faced with emotional conflict between her feelings for Larry and Alex, despite being betrayed by both.
The show's supporting cast is equally, if not more so, riveting. Relatable and often hilarious, the cast of supporting characters that make up the women's correctional facility provide the show comic relief and heart. Each character on the show also provides a level of unpredictability, where one minute the characters have each other's backs, and the next they're at each other's throats.
Throughout the course of the season, Piper loses the trust of her business partner, fiance and family, as she tries to safely serve her 15-month sentence.
When does "Orange Is The New Black" return? The series returns with a new batch of 13 episodes for its second season on Netflix in July 2014.
