US Surf Open riot: 18-yr-old sentenced to 12 days in jail

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif.

Illario Niko Johnson, 18, of Chino will also have to perform 200 hours of community service, after pleading guilty to one felony count of arson of property, a misdemeanor count of participating in an unlawful assembly and a misdemeanor count of recklessly causing a fire to the property of another.

The 18-year-old was identified and arrested on July 31 through social media, police said.

Johnson must perform 50 hours of community service with the Glendale Fire Department and 150 more in another program that is approved by probation officials, said Deputy District Attorney Andrew Katz.

Johnson was also ordered to stay away from Main Street in Huntington Beach between Orange Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway.

Crowds surged through the area, breaking windows, causing several injuries and thousands of dollars in damage. The riot quickly escalated and involved numerous fights, acts of vandalism, thefts and arson fires. Approximately 250 police officers were required to control the incident.
