Dwyane Wade, Gabrielle Union's basketball player fiance, confirmed to reporters that he fathered a child with another woman prior to becoming engaged to the actress earlier this month.
Wade, who plays for the Miami Heat, told ESPN following a game on Dec. 30 that he fathered a child while separated from Union, whom he has dated since 2009. Union has made no public statement regarding her fiance's newborn child.
"In our time apart, in our break, in our pain and our hurt, a blessing came out of it in my life, having a son who was born healthy," Wade said to ESPN.
"I got a chance to see him," Wade continued. "I'm involved in my kids' lives, you know. When my kids lived at home with me, when they weren't living at home with me, I tried to do everything I could to see them."
Wade proposed to Union on Dec. 21 with an 8.5 carat cushion cut engagement ring. The actress shared a photo of the ring on her official Instagram page with the caption, "Sooooo this happened #Yessss @dwyanewade."
Wade spoke to Jay Leno in an appearance on "The Tonight Show" earlier this year, where he commented about his temporary split from Union, prior to becoming engaged.
"Celebrity relationships is very hard," Wade said. "For us, this was a big year for us and our relationship from the standpoint of she was shooting her show 'Being Mary Jane,' gone most of the year, I was dealing with my injuries, trying to win a championship. So we kind of took a step back (sic)."
"We supported each other, but we took a step back for a little while," Wade continued. "But at the end of the day we came back together and [said], 'Listen, we want to continue this, we want to continue to try to get better each day,' and she's been with me, and I've been with her all summer long. We're going strong now."
