Marvel has released the first image and plot synopsis for its new sci-fi superhero movie "Guardians of the Galaxy," which shows a raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper as well as actors Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt, wrestler Dave Bautista and Vin Diesel in character.
The cast members stand in a lineup in the photo, posted on Twitter on New Year's Eve. Pratt plays Peter Quill, an American pilot who "finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt" after stealing an orb coveted by the villain Ronan, played by Lee Pace, according to a statemement by distributor Walt Disney Studios. Saldana stars as Gamora, Bautista plays Drax the Destroyer and Diesel portrays Groot.
"To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits -- Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer," the statement said. "But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand -- with the galaxy's fate in the balance."
Pratt -- best known for his role as Andy on the NBC comedy series "Parks and Recreation," Saldana and director James Gunn spoke to OTRC.com about "Guardians of the Galaxy" at 2013 San Diego Comic-Con in July.
"I'll tell you what people are gonna love. Rocket. Rocket Raccoon," Pratt said. "That little guy is amazing. So frickin' cool. So cool. He's like a two-foot-two raccoon-slash-humanoid character ... He's got a foul mouth, he's got a machine gun ... People are gonna freak out." (Watch videos of his and other stars' interviews below.)
Other cast members who star in "Guardians of the Galaxy" include Michael Rooker -- last seen as Merle on AMC's "The Walking Dead," Glenn Close and Benicio Del Toro. The movie is set for release on Aug. 1.
