Rosemead fatal hit-and-run suspect surrenders

ROSEMEAD, Calif.

The fatal crash occurred Sunday around 7 p.m. at Greendale Avenue and Marshall Street. Authorities said an SUV hit the victim, who was believed to be crossing the street at the time. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was later identified by the coroner as 69-year-old Qingrong Chai.

A day later, 32-year-old Janet Bowman walked into the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Temple Station lobby and surrendered herself to traffic investigators.

Bowman was arrested for hit-and-run causing death or injury and vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.

She was released Tuesday morning after posting $50,000 bond. Authorities say Bowman's 2007 Nissan Murano is being held as evidence.

She is due in court Feb. 28 in El Monte.
