OTRC: Golden Globes: '12 Years A Slave' wins Best Motion Picture - Drama

The movie "12 Years A Slave" has won the 2014 Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Drama.

The winners were announced at a ceremony in Los Angeles on Jan. 12. "12 Years A Slave" beat nominees "Captain Phillips," "Gravity," "Philomena" and "Rush."

The movie "12 Years A Slave" is based on a true story and focuses on New York man Solomon Northup, played by Chiwitel Ejiofor, who is kidnapped and sold into slavery in the American South in 1841. Ejiofor, Lupita Nyong'o -- who plays slave Patsey, Michael Fassbender -- who plays a cruel planter and slave owner, and director Steve McQueen also received Golden Globe nods.

The movie was nominated for seven Golden Globes -- tying with "American Hustle" for the largest number of total nods.
