The city council voted unanimously to display only the official flags of the United States, the state of California and the city of West Hollywood on public facilities, including City Hall. The vote was completed at the council's November 18, 2013 meeting.
Council members felt it would be more inclusive to take down the symbol of gay pride, saying West Hollywood is a city for everyone, gay or straight.
The city's policy is to display unofficial flags on public property and facilities for special occasions. A spokesman for the city cited Gay Pride month in June and Transgender Awareness Month in November as such examples.
Rainbow flags will permanently remain on flagpoles on medians along Santa Monica Boulevard between La Cienega and Robertson boulevards.
