OTRC: Motley Crue to split: Group announces retirement, Final Tour

Motley Crue members talk about their upcoming split and Final Tour at a press conference in L.A. on Jan. 28, 2014.

Kickstart our hearts, because ours just broke.

The hair metal and rock band Motley Crue, made up of Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars and drummer Tommy Lee, is set to retire after its upcoming tour with shock rocker Alice Cooper and after more than 30 years.

"The announcement was solidified when the band signed a formal Cessation Of Touring Agreement, effective at the end of 2015, in front of global media in Los Angeles today," the group said in a statement to OTRC.com on Tuesday, Jan. 28. "Celebrating the announcement of The Final Tour, the band will perform on ABC's 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' TONIGHT and will appear on 'CBS This Morning' TOMORROW MORNING."

"I'll miss playing with the guys but I won't quit playing rock and roll!!" Neil said. "I feel there are a lot of great opportunities and exciting projects after Motley."

He added, as quoted on the group's Twitter page: "We have always been a fan band. And I think that's what people will remember about us. #RIPMotleyCrue"

The band members signed what they called a "binding 'Cessation Of Touring' Agreement to prevent future, unauthorized touring" and said they would "go their separate ways after the lengthy 2-year touring cycle," according to the statement.

"Everything must come to an end!!" Lee said. "We always had a vision of going out with a big [expletive] bang and not playing county fairs and clubs with one or two original band members! Our job here is done!!!"

"Real hard rock bands are hard to find"

Motley Crue formed in 1981 and became famous for hit rock anthems such as "Girls, Girls, Girls," "Smoin' In The Boys' Room," "Dr. Feelgood," "Kickstart My Heart" and "Home Sweet Home" (the latter of which was once recorded by Carrie Underwood and is currently featured in a Coldwell Banker real estate group commercial).

The band was plagued by infighting during the 1990s. Neil left Motley Crue for several years due to creative differences. He and Lee and Sixx all pursued solo projects. The original members of Motley Crue reunited as a group in late 2004 and went on tour.

Mars referenced the group's "tumultuous history," saying: "(It has been) more drama than 'General Hospital' -- it keeps 'em watchin' and they keep comin' back."

Motley Crue will kick off the Final Tour in Grand Rapids, Michigan on July 2 and perform in other cities in North America until Nov. 21, 2014. Other tour dates have not yet been announced.

Motley Crue also plans to release a tribute album featuring country stars such as Florida Georgia Line and Rascal Flatts in the summer and a movie based on the band's 2001 memoir "The Dirt," in 2015. The project had been delayed for years.

"When it comes to putting together a new show we always push the envelope and that's part of Motley Crue's legacy," Sixx, the group's bassist, said in the statement. "As far as letting on to what we're doing, that would be like finding out what you're getting for Christmas before you open the presents. We think in an age of too much information, we'd like to keep some surprises close to our chest until we launch the Final Tour."

"Real hard rock bands are hard to find these days," Alice Cooper added. "Motley has always gone on stage with one attitude and that's to blow the audience away. That's exactly how we do it. Putting Motley Crue and Alice Cooper together is going to be just what this summer really NEEDS. We're going to go out there and tear it up, and I can't wait to see Motley on stage. Motley Crue and Alice Cooper -- a match made in... Armageddon?"

"I would much rather see a band go out w/ original lineup & strong than stay too long at the party," tweeted veteran rock and metal TV and radio personality Eddie Trunk. "Congrats @MotleyCrue Respect the decision."
