OTRC: 'Sharknado 2' update: Tara Reid, Ian Ziering to return

Tara Reid talks to OTRC.com at the premiere of 'Sharknado' on Aug. 2, 2013. The film aired on SyFy in July and was widely praised -- and mocked -- on Twitter. It was screened in select theaters on the night of the premiere.

Syfy has revealed the plot of its previously-announced "Sharknado" sequel, "Sharknado 2: The Second One," and has confirmed Tara Reid and Ian Ziering will reprise their roles.

The cable network announced in a statement obtained by OTRC.com on Friday, Jan. 31, that Ziering, best known as Steve from "Beverly Hills, 90210," and Reid, of "American Pie" and "Van Wilder" fame, will return as Fin and April in the sequel, which sees a "freak weather system" turning its "deadly fury" on New York City, unleashing -- yes -- a "Sharknado."

The new film is set to premiere on SyFy in July. Anthony Ferrante is returning to direct and screenwriter Thunder Levin, who wrote the first film, will also pen the script for the new movie, the latest in the cable network's offerings that pay tribute to the old Hollywood B-movies.

"We're thrilled to be able to bring back the talent that made Sharknado a hit. Can lightning strike twice?" Paul Bales, COO of production company Asylum, said in a statement posted by The Hollywood Reporter. "I don't know, but it's a scientific fact that you're more likely to be killed by lightning than by a shark. This film will have lightning and sharks, so that's got to count for something."

The first "Sharknado" was about sharks who get sucked up into waterspouts and kill people in Los Angeles. It earned moderate ratings -- a 0.4 among adults between ages 18 and 49 and was watched by about 1.3 million people. However, it remained a trending topic on Twitter for days.

"When I first read [the script], I thought, 'Oh my God, you've gotta be kidding me,'" Reid, known for her role in the "American Pie" films and "The Big Lebowski," told OTRC.com in August, regarding the first "Sharknado" film.
