Oxnard police shoot, injure woman at park

OXNARD, Calif.

The incident happened just before 12:30 p.m. The victim was taken to Ventura County Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition. No officers were injured.

Detectives said the 42-year-old woman, who is believed to be a transient, had called a mental health hotline prior to the incident and threatened to kill herself. Someone from the hotline then called police.

"We received a call about a suicidal suspect here at Del Sol Park. Our officers responded immediately. They were able to make contact with the subject. She appeared to be armed with a handgun and brandished it at officers," said Miguel Lopez with the Oxnard Police Department.

According to Lopez, witness statements show that both the suspect and the officers fired their weapons, but he said that has not been confirmed. The officer-involved shooting remains under investigation.
