The U.S. won a bronze medal in the new event of team figure skating Sunday.
The team was led by world champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White, who won both the short and free dance, and helped by national champion Gracie Gold's superb free skate.
Jamie Anderson, 23, of South Lake Tahoe, Calif. also became a U.S. gold medalist after winning the women's slopestyle snowboarding event in a near flawless run.
She scored a 95.25 on that run to make America 2 for 2 in slopestyle's colorful and treacherous debut on the Olympic stage. Enni Rukajarvi of Finland won Silver and Jenny Jones took bronze to give Britain its first Olympic medal on the snow.
Before showcasing her skills, Anderson said she enjoyed a brief "Zen" moment at the top of the course.
"I was really just trying to stay calm and kind of reserve my energy," Anderson said. "It was a lot of stress up there and even though it's just another competition, the stage and the outreach that this event connects to us is out of control."
Her win comes a day after Sage Kotsenburg, known to some as "second-run Sage," tamed the treacherous slopestyle course at the Extreme Park on Saturday. He grabbed the first gold medal of the Sochi Olympics - paving the way for Team USA.
Meantime, it was a disappointing day for Bode Miller, one of the pre-race favorites in Sunday's men's Olympic downhill. Miller lost speed on the lower half of the course and faded to a disappointing eighth, as Matthias of Austria won gold.
Switzerland's Dario Cologna won fold in the men's 30-kilometer skiathlon while Sweden took silver and Norway took the bronze medal.
There was also a little bit of a scare in women's snowboarding when Sarka Pancochova of the Czech Republic lost control and landed on her head. She lay motionaless on the snow for over a minute before recovering to stand up and make it to the bottom.
Her helmet cracked, but she was OK. A commenter noted that when snowboarding started in 1998, Olympian's weren't required to wear helmets.
Host Russia won its first medal of the 2014 Sochi Games Sunday, with Olga Graf taking bronze in the women's 3,000-meter speedskating final.
