Accused gang member convicted in USC-area shooting

February 12, 2014 11:08:16 AM PST
A 21-year-old man was convicted Monday of attempted murder for shooting several partygoers near the campus of the University of Southern California.

Brandon Spencer was found guilty of the shooting that left four people injured at a Halloween party in 2012. Prosecutors say Spencer was targeting a rival gang member when he shot at the crowd.

The defense maintained it was a case of mistaken identity, with Spencer's father contending his son was prosecuted in a rush to judgment to satisfy the University of Southern California and its donors.

Spencer responded angrily to the conviction Tuesday, turning over a chair and demanding deputies shoot him.

Spencer is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 21. He faces the possibility of life in prison.
