John Travolta credits Scientology with helping him to heal following the 2009 death of his son Jett, echoing similar comments wife Kelly Preston had made in the past.
Travolta, 60, made his comments during a public interview on stage at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London on Sunday. Jett, who had autism, died at age 16 in January 16 after suffering a seizure at his family's home in the Bahamas. Travolta and Preston, 51, formed the Jett Travolta Foundation, which raises awareness for kids with special needs, in his honor. The two currently live with daughter Ella Bleu, 13, and son Benjamin, who is 3 and was born after Jett's death.
According to BBC News, Travolta said at the event that he "didn't want to wake up" after the tragedy, adding: ""Life was no longer interesting to me, so it took a lot to get me better."
The Church of Scientology had been pivotal to his recovery, he said.
"I will forever be grateful to Scientology for supporting me for two years solid, I mean Monday through Sunday," BBC News quoted the actor as saying. "They didn't take a day off, working through different angles of the techniques to get through grief and loss, and to make me feel that finally I could get through a day."
In a September 2011 interview with Health magazine, Preston said Scientology is among the things she turns to "when times are tough," adding: "I don't know if I would have made it through without it. We've been able to navigate through it and to come to a place that is a lot better."
She also credited Travolta, other members of her family and fellow Scientologist and actress Kirstie Alley, one of her best friends, as helping her to cope during hard times.
