The incident occurred on Sunset Boulevard near Mapleton Drive around 4:50 p.m.
Police say Salma Hayek's brother, 40-year-old Sami Hayek, was behind the wheel of a 2006 Ford GT driving eastbound on Sunset Boulevard when he lost control.
He then crossed into the westbound lanes and collided head-on with a 2011 Toyota Tacoma pickup, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Hayek's male passenger, identified as 43-year-old Ian Cuttler Sala of New York, died at the scene. Cuttler is a well-known photographer in the entertainment industry. He won a Grammy Award for best art direction for "Johnny Cash: The Legend" box set music package.
Hayek suffered several broken ribs and a laceration to his head. The driver of the pickup was identified as Alvin Gomez, 20, of Los Angeles. He allegedly suffered a broken foot and complained of body pain. Both were transported to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Westwood.
Hayek is a furniture designer.
The investigation is ongoing. Why Hayek lost control or whether charges will be filed remains unknown. The 2006 Ford GT Hayek was driving is a $130,000 luxury vehicle that can reach a top speed of 205 mph.
