West Los Angeles College student arrested in ID theft scheme

CULVER CITY, Calif.

Reon Jordan, 34, is accused of shopping on the West Los Angeles College campus with fraudulent credit cards. She was arrested after a nearly nine-month investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Community College Bureau.

Detectives say Jordan used three different names to buy what are called "gift receipts" on campus and then used those gift receipts to pay for her classes. Officials started to investigate after employees reported suspicious transactions totaling more than $1,000.

Investigators say Jordan got her victims' information while working at abeo, a medical billing company with offices in Pasadena. She worked there since 2008 and potentially had access to thousands of client identity profiles.

Detectives say Jordan was found to be in possession of more than 400 identity profiles and more than 200 credit card numbers. The identity theft victims were from Los Angeles, Torrance, Santa Monica, Topanga, Malibu and Mammoth Lakes. She also had victims in Tennessee and Mississippi.

Jordan was booked on charges of grand theft, burglary and unauthorized use of personal identifying information. Her bail was set at $1.2 million.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information was asked to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Community College Bureau at (323) 669-7555.
